Happy 1st Birthday, Blog!

June 15, 2009 · 15 comments

It’s hard to believe it’s been a year already. Instead of marking the occassion with words, I decided to create a short video. (Those of you reading this in email may need to click through to see the video)

For anyone who started frequenting the blog in the past six months, I’ve also shared a few of my favorite posts from the first six months. You’ll find those below the video.

As promised, here are some of my favorite posts from the first few months of this blog:

Social Media Isn’t the Second Coming
I’ve seen some suggestion recently that “traditional” PR tactics are being put to death by social media. That news releases and social media releases have no use. That pitching story ideas by Twitter will soon be the norm. I hate to burst the bubble, but social media isn’t the second coming of…well, you know who. Read the full article…

Should Marketers and Media Wield Their Power for Good?
I shared a few videos with some friends this weekend as I led a discussion on the impact media has on defining beauty and sexuality in our culture. I found myself asking “do marketers and media have actual influence over how consumers view themselves and the world around them?” I say, “yes.” That led to a bigger question. If so, do we have a responsibility to use that power for good more often? Read the full article…

Five Ways Twitter Will Make You Smarter
We’re all looking for ways to become better professionals. From conferences and webinars to books and seminars, we spend good money and give precious time to glean insights from accomplished marketers. Those are great, of course, but what if I told you that you can get smarter for free with Twitter and 20 minutes or so a day. Read the full article…

In Plain English, Please
I’m tired. And the sense I’m getting from others is that they’re tired, too. It becomes more exhausting every day to decipher what most of our fellow marketers are trying to actually say or recommend and I think I know why. Read the full article…

Should We Keep Professional and Personal Separate in Social Networking?

When it comes to social networking tools, should there be a line in the sand on whether it’s for personal contacts or professional connections? Maybe I should share with you what first made this question come to mind for me. Read the full article…

David, Happy 1st Birthday! Thank you for the kind words. You’ve been a natural at this from the start. The other day I read a post by Brian Solis about authenticity and authority. Your authenticity and generosity has built well deserved authority. Keep up the great work!

Just wanted to wish you congratulations David. One year is a lot of posts, do you have the actual number? I probably need to go back and read most of them pre-2009…

One year is a lot of posts for a guy like you. :) I’m not as prolific a blogger Mr. Foster.

Some weeks I’d get 3 in. Sometimes 10 days would go by, depending on workload. According to the dashboard, there were 87 posts and almost 1,300 comments. When I started, I’d have assumed there would be 90 comments on those 87 posts, half from my mom. :)

Seriously, I’m shocked by how many people take time to comment here and share their insights. I really do appreciate it and hope they know that!

Happy birthday Communications Catalyst! And congrats to you, David, for providing your thoughts and insights each week that help us all become smarter and more effective PR pros (and, of course a hat tip to Leo for spurring you to action).

What’s special about your blog for me is the role it plays in our community. Your voice is a powerful one, David. It’s one that challenges many traditional thoughts and paradigms. You make us think. And often, you spur us to react, comment and join the conversation. I think THAT’S what makes your blog so unique. It’s ability to start up important conversations. Discussions that need to be taking place–both online and off.

Keep up the good work, sir. Looking forward to celebrating many more birthdays in the years ahead.

Awesome, congrats sir. We think alike! I was just shooting a quick vid the other day for my blog’s b-day next week. Keep up the great posts, always look forward to your updates and the follow up conversation that evolves through the comments. As Arik noted, you do a an excellent job of making us all think about how to adapt to the changing industry landscape and what that means both on and offline. Cheers.
